Mission

In keeping with the department's mission to enhance the quality of life for our
community, the mission of the Streets & Traffic
Division is two-fold: (1) to maintain the city's streets and alleys so that
they can be safely and efficiently used by the traveling public and (2) to
provide the traffic signs and markings needed for traffic control and safe,
efficient travel on the city's streets.
About the Division
The
Streets Division includes 30 full-time employees.
These employees are responsible for the maintenance of alleys and 545 miles of street. These
employees also provide staff support to efforts in the
Urban Forestry Division for the pruned refuse
and leaf removal programs and provide staff and equipment to the
Community Development Department for neighborhood
clean-ups.
The Traffic Operations Division was formerly part of the Traffic Engineering
section in the Public Works and Transportation Department. In January, 1998,
this work unit was moved to the new Operations & Maintenance Department as
part of a reorganization. This unit is responsible for designing, installing
and maintaining traffic signs, street name signs, and pavement markings; counting
traffic; conducting traffic studies and surveys; and preparing analysis on
various traffic and parking issues. Currently there are over 19,900 traffic
signs maintained by this Division. The six employees in this Division, along
with numerous part-time staff, work closely with the traffic engineering staff in
Public Works Department to ensure that travel
along Modesto city streets is safe and efficient.
