City of Modesto Pruning Program

TreeSince 1980, the City of Modesto has been pruning and/or inspecting street trees on a regular, pre-determined cycle.  This maintenance strategy was selected due to significant advantages in efficiency and public safety.

The pruning cycle is performed by neighborhoods on a five-year rotation.  The crews work systematically through a neighborhood completing a "general prune" or inspection for all public street trees before moving on to a new neighborhood.  A "general prune" includes deadwood removal, mistletoe sanitation, weight reduction of heavy limbs and several types of clearance pruning.

A Service Request system is also used to allow a way for citizens to call for a condition that needs attention apart from the pruning cycle.  These requests are either incorporated into the cycle pruning schedule or prioritized and handled by separate crews.  Emergency calls are handled ASAP.  If you have questions on the pruning cycle or need to have a tree condition assessed, please call 342-2249.
