Explorer Academy Gets Under Way!
On Wednesday, June 14th, Modesto
area Troop 911 hosted the annual Explorer Academy. The Academy is a
community sponsored, unique opportunity for young adults to explore the
possibility of a career in Fire
Service. This year, more that twenty 16-20 year olds, representing
cities from all
over the Central Valley, spent four days in hands-on Fire Service career
training. These young people had the chance to experience the
challenges first responders work through every day.
Their four days were filled
with simulations designed to mimic car accidents, employing the
"jaws-of-life" to free victims. Other simulations included
multiple story rescue, climbing the aerial ladder, footing
a ladder and ladder climbing. Fire attack techniques included hoses
handling, nozzle selection, nozzle application as well as real fire
simulation in the training tower.
With fire comes smoke hence breathing apparatus safety was a must including
"buddy breathing" in case tanks run out of air. Future
firefighter learned the importance of fire safety gear (including helmets
and turnouts) by "feeling the heat" with protective gear and then
without.
Of course, first aide and CPR training
was an big part of their week. They learned to set broken
bones, proper position for comfort and transport, bandaging open
wounds, looking for pulse and breath.
The Modesto Fire Department
followed up with a riding tour of Airport Rescue
91, our newest addition to the MFD fleet.

We are proud of this Valley's youth and
pleased to be a sponsor of this year's Fire Academy. For more
