City School's Bus Drivers Participate in Simulation
A
truck crashes into a Modesto
City school bus. What type of emergency response can you
expect? What kind of injuries will be involved? How can we work
as a team to provide the best possible care? These are questions that
were answered during the bus-crash simulation staged by the Modesto Fire
Department and Modesto City School's bus drivers.
City
School's bus drivers became student passengers during the two-hour
simulation. Each passenger mimicked a variety of injuries from mild
bruises and concussions, to life-threatening traumas, puncture wounds and
gashes. In an effort to stay as true to life as possible, participants
screamed, panicked and moaned their way through to safety.
Firefighters arrived in stages, simulating various travel
distances. Incident
command leaders drove the event through the simulated fuel spill, delivery of
emergency medical aid
and
then final rescue.
Designated fire personnel observed the event, critiquing the
emergency medical response and the efficiency of command.
Everyone benefited.
City
School's employees learned what to expect from first responders, emergency
medical response and team work. The City Firefighters confirmed the
challenges and complications of a major bus crash and the value of practice.
It
is through cooperative efforts such as these that the City remains prepared
to deliver the best first response possible.
