577-5355 City Hosts Celebration of Women’s History Month at King-Kennedy Memorial Center The City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department and the Inter-Agency Committee will recognize Women’s History Month in our community at the Second Annual Celebration of Women event on Saturday, March 20, 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at King-Kennedy Memorial Center and Mellis Park, 601 N. Martin Luther King Drive, Modesto.
Representing the City of Modesto and opening this year’s event, entitled “Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility,” will be Vice Mayor Janice Keating. Elected to the City Council in March 2002, Ms. Keating currently serves on the California Tax Education Council, is a Neighborhood Watch Block Coordinator and volunteers each year for the AARP Tax Program at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center.
Dr. Marvalene Hughes, President of California State University–Stanislaus, is keynote speaker for the event. Ms. Hughes has continually enhanced her deep commitment to academic excellence, community service and partnerships with public/private sectors. As a researcher, author and co-author, she has contributed to articles on education, managing organizations, human behavior and diversity. She has given hundreds of presentations to national and international audiences throughout the United States and the world.
Dr. Hughes recently coordinated a visit with the managers and senior editor of The New York Times, where she led a delegation of 25 women presidents and chancellors to explore the issues pertaining to the unique contributions of women to state universities and colleges.
Additional highlights throughout the day will include the PARTY! Mobile, family activities, face painting, games, entertainment and prize drawings.
