The city attorney is the chief legal officer of the city and
is appointed by, and responsible to, the City
Council. The City Attorney's Office represents the City
Council and the city's boards, commissions, officers and
employees in legal proceedings in which the city is concerned or is
a party. It is also the responsibility of the City Attorney's Office
to advise the City Council and
all boards, commissions, officers and employees of the city
regarding their official duties. The City Attorney's Office prepares
and approves ordinances, resolutions, contracts and other legal
documents and prosecutes all violations of the Modesto Municipal
Code
